Do you eat breakfast in the morning? If you do, then good job. You are on the right track. If not, listen up, because eating breakfast every morning is very important. After not eating all night, your body and mind need fuel to function. If you do not eat all morning, your brain has no fuel to use until lunch. You will notice this in your lack of concentration clear thought, and memory. Doesn’t it seem ridiculous to spend half of your day at work or school running on fumes from the day before? Eating breakfast has been proven to increase your concentration, productivity, and even your mood.
Maybe you skip breakfast because you are trying to lose weight. But studies show that people who do not eat in the morning are more likely to eat too much later in the day. You will be tempted to eat unhealthy snacks throughout the morning because you are hungry. Or be so hungry and undernourished by lunchtime, that you eat far too much. These extra calories usually add up to more than the 350-500 calories that you would eat at breakfast. And you will be suffering! If you do not eat breakfast because you are short on time, try deciding what to eat the night before, or bringing something with you. You could bring a nutrition bar, some dry cereal, or some fruit.
As far as what to have for breakfast, the rule is anything is better than nothing. A little fuel is better than none, as you know with your car. But you can design a well-balanced breakfast that will satisfy your hunger and energy needs all through the morning. Try to have carbohydrates, protein, a fruit or veggie, and a little fat. For example, you could have two pieces of toast with peanut butter, and a banana. This easy meal satisfies all four components. You could also try hot oatmeal with milk and raisins. If you do not like traditional breakfast foods, that’s alright. Have whatever food you enjoy eating instead, but try to have the same nutrition components: carbs, protein, fruit or veggie, and a little fat. This fat is probably included in your carb or protein food, so don’t even worry about that. There are many options that are delicious and include the nutrition you need. Be creative, and enjoy your very useful breakfast!
