A Study of the Learning Styles of Teenagers: Behind the Counter Drugs

A Study of the Learning Styles of Teenagers: Behind the Counter Drugs

The two official categories of medications recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs. Behind-the-counter (BTC) drugs have not been categorized officially by the FDA, though categorization is being considered. While not officially categorized, Behind-the-Counter drugs are regulated by the FDA. What causes a drug to be placed behind the counter is the presence of pseudoephedrine, a compound that can be used to make methamphetamine, a powerfully addictive drug that can be made in the home.

The new legal provisions from the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005 translate into restrictions on buying the drug. A prescription, however, is not required for purchase. The consumer must present identification and sign a logbook. This restriction limits the amount of grams that a consumer can purchase in a given time period. Federal law states that the largest quantity that can be purchased is 3.6 grams in one day and 9.0 grams in one month. These restrictions were put into practice after George W. Bush signed the Patriot Act in 2006 to support the fight against illegal methamphetamine production. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration there is a correlation between the abuse of methamphetamine and an increase in violence in the home and child abuse.

My research project studied the most effective methods of learning for one hundred twenty-one high school students through teaching them about Behind-the-Counter drugs. Overall, high school students who were surveyed knew relatively little about the topic of BTC drugs as judged by the survey on the topic. The results of the post-reading surveys demonstrated that of the three different write-ups one did not produce more learning over the other. However, they all produced learning. This outcome leads to the conclusion that high school students can learn from various writing styles.
